Stockist Interview: Two Old Hippies in Nashville, TN
Today we’re launching a new feature on the blog: stockist interviews. This is where we find out a little more about the shops, boutiques and barbershops that carry A.J. Murray’s products. We want to spread the word about these stores so you can stop in whenever you’re in town and support these shops that support A.J. Murray’s month after month. First up is Two Old Hippies in Nashville, TN.
From the Two Old Hippies website: “Two Old Hippies opened it’s “flagship” lifestyle store in Music City, Nashville Tennessee on September 19, 2011. Located at 12th and Pine in The Gulch area, our 8,000 square foot store offers guests “an experience”. Featuring women’s and men’s apparel, shoes and accessories, along with unique jewelry and gifts. The store also hosts home decor and books. If shopping isn’t your thing, we host live music 5 nights a week on our stage, featuring a Hammond B3 Organ, Roland keyboard, Ludwig drum set, and our own Bedell, Breedlove and Weber instruments. Or you can visit “The Vault” which is home for our premium selection of guitars and provides sanctuary for those that wish to play in a quiet space. Our walls are lined with an incredible collection of rock n roll memorabilia all available for sale. And most guests don’t leave without a photo of the Magic Bus!”
Share a bit about your store.
Two Old Hippies is known for its unique finds, from apparel, shoes and boots, accessories, to our amazing jewelry and gifts.
How did you decide on the name?
Long story! Tom and Molly Bedell were hippies in the 1960’s and decided when they founded Two Old Hippies that name represented some of their most fun experiences in life.
What made you decide to take the leap and open up a brick and mortar store?
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. We are entrepreneurs and marketers by nature. And we like to control our own destiny.
Where do you look for inspiration / new products?
We do a lot of shopping when we travel the world, attend trade shows, and luckily many brands seek us out. We also truly seek products that no other stores host in our town, what’s the point in being like everyone else?
What’s something that our readers might be surprised to learn about you/your shop?
We have the best team that really make our guests feel welcome. One member said it best, you arrive as a guest and leave as a friend. We also have an amazing guitar Vault where we host our own brands of acoustic instruments made in Bend, Oregon. We are a desginated Live Music Venue by the City of Nashville and host music 4-5 nights per week and a kids only open mic on Sundays.
What’s a typical day look like for you?
Everyone gets excited about new products as they flow in and we work on getting them tagged, on the floor, and posted on social media outlets. We re-stock from the previous days sales, and continually re-merchandise all areas of the store to keep it fresh. Personally, I spend time researching new product ideas for us as well.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not in the shop?
Travel, listen to live music, hike, cook, entertain friends.
How would you describe your typical customer that purchases A.J. Murray’s products?
I don’t think there is a typical guest. We attract people of all ages and they love that we offer so many interesting new products they have not seen elsewhere. If I had to venture a guess, it would be a guest ranging from 20-70, appreciates a nice product, and is well groomed.
What did you like about A.J. Murray’s, that made you want to stock us?
We liked the packaging and product offerings.
What’s your personal favorite A.J. Murray’s product?
The Beard Oil, my sons have beards and they feel scruffy, so this makes them soft and smells great.
What’s your customers’ favorite A.J. Murray’s product?
Again, I would say Beard Oils and also the Lip Balm sells like crazy at the cash wrap.
If there was one item or scent you’d like A.J. Murray’s to release, what would it be?
A clean scent, like rain or linen.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Keep doing what you’re doing, it is working.
Thanks to Molly from Two Old Hippies in Nashville, Tennessee for today’s interview!
